Note that the hospital offers eligible nurses a voluntary “opt out” of medical insurance benefits in exchange for additional pay of $50 per pay period. VHH employees opting out of coverage must provide, annually, reasonable evidence of proof of coverage consistent with the Affordable Care Act. No opt out will be paid if VHH knows or has reason to know that the employee or a member of the employee’s family does not have alternate coverage.

Additional education benefits

Regular full-time and part-time registered nurses who have completed pre-approved qualified college or university coursework are entitled to participate in the VHH tuition reimbursement program. VHH reimbursement and reimbursement from other sources such as government agencies (e.g., G.I. Bill) or other educational benefits (e.g., scholarships or grants) cannot exceed the cost of tuition. If amounts received from outside sources reach maximum reimbursement level for VHH, the VHH contribution will be reduced. Documentation of outside financial assistance is required before reimbursement by VHH.

Registered nurses with less than three years of service to VHH enrolled in the BSN program will receive reimbursement of 50% of the total cost of the program up to $4500/year. Those with at least three years of service will receive 50% up to $7500/year. And those with five years or more will receive 75% up to $10,000/year. These reimbursements will be made upon submission of grades after each quarter/semester.

Paid education time

Registered nurses will receive their base rate of pay for all in-service meetings designated by VHH as mandatory.

After one year of employment at VHH, regular full-time and part-time registered nurses may request paid education time. VHH will pay nurses at their base rate of pay for the following educational activities:

  • Classes approved by the Board of Registered Nurses to fulfill the Registered Nurses’ Continuing Education Requirements up to 24 hours per year for full-time registered nurses, up to 12 hours per year for part-time registered nurses, and up to eight hours per year for Per Diem staff who have worked at least 700 hours in the previous 12 months.

VHH will provide such time provided the registered nurse complies with each of the following:

  • There will be a direct or indirect benefit to the maintenance of or improvement in the nurse’s skills.
  • Application in writing is received no less than 30 days before the requested date of the education program.
  • Education days will not interfere with staffing requirements for patient care.

Paid time for education may be scheduled by the manager in a manner that reduces the potential for overtime or premium pay for either the registered nurse on education time or the registered nurse providing coverage. Not all time spent in courses will count as time worked for purposes of computing overtime; unused education hours do not roll over to the following year. Travel time to and from such courses will be paid in accordance with federal and state wage and hour laws.

VHH will offer opportunities to participate in specialty training programs (e.g., OR training program, Versant Registered Nurse Residency program, critical care training) at no cost to registered nurse so long as nurse remains in VHH employ for at least two years following participation in the specialty program.

The preceptor training course will continue and opportunities to participate will be posted and not unreasonably denied.

  • Screening and testing - The health plan will pay 100% for only medically necessary screening and testing of COVID-19. Beginning Saturday, Jan. 15, 2022, members covered by private health insurance or a group health plan are now able to purchase over-the-counter (OTC) COVID-19 tests authorized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) at no cost without a prescription. The reimbursement of OTC COVID-19 tests will remain in effect until the Public Health Emergency (PHE) is rescinded.
    • COVID-19 test kits can be purchased at network pharmacies at $0 member out-of-pocket, with a quantity limit of eight tests per covered individual every 30 days. This eight-test limit does not apply to such test kits ordered with a prescription. COVID-19 tests kits must be purchased at the pharmacy counter with your medical/rx insurance card to ensure that they are processed properly. View Navitus’ list of network pharmacies.
    • Members can also submit a claim for reimbursement for COVID-19 OTC test kits purchased on or after Jan. 15, including those from non-network pharmacies and non-pharmacy locations.
