Wayne Lyon knew what he wanted early on.
“At a very young age, I aspired to be in the military, particularly the U.S. Air Force. In my youth, I was a member of the Boy Scouts and the Cadets (ROTC). As a teenager, I fell in love with flying and airplanes (particularly fighter planes), space, speed, aircraft designs, jet engines, etc. I just had to make it as real an experience being close to planes and what better way than joining the U.S. Air Force.”
Wayne was stationed at the 379th Strategic Hospital, Strategic Air Command (SAC) in Wurtsmith AFB, MI from 1987-1990 and the 61st Medical Squadron, Air Force Space Command (AFSPC) in Los Angeles from 1990-1992. During his service, Wayne acquired a vast set of skills as he participated in non-commissioned officer leadership, aero-medical evacuation systems, healthcare administrative revenue cycles and other related activities such as patient access, health information management, and patient financial services. It’s not a big surprise that Wayne found his way to a career at USC University Hospital as Director of Coding!
Wayne finds that his experience with USC hospitals now is not dissimilar to the peace-time mission of military hospital operations. However, USC has at least one advantage! “The USC job is more flexible where decisions are situational based on the best solution for problems or issues at all levels – staff, management, and executive,” he notes.
