On Thursday, Oct. 17, USC participated in the annual Great ShakeOut drill, a global earthquake preparedness exercise. This yearly event allows USC to assess and improve its emergency preparedness and response systems. More than 30 schools and departments took part, activating Department Operations Centers (DOCs) to collaborate with the university’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC), simulating coordination during an earthquake scenario.
Highlights included damage assessments by Facilities Planning & Management and Environmental Health & Safety teams, emergency communication tests by the Department of Public Safety, and disaster communications by the USC Amateur Radio Team. The Campus Emergency Response Team (CERT), composed of staff and faculty volunteers, was activated, and USC Student Health reviewed its mass casualty plan. These efforts emphasize USC’s ongoing commitment to campus safety and earthquake preparedness, particularly in seismically active Southern California.
