School and division recognition efforts
In addition to university-wide efforts, schools and divisions across the university recognize their employees in a variety of ways – ranging from formal to fun.
Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism
Annenberg hosts a series of Summer Staff Appreciation Days to recognize staff for their dedication and hard work throughout the year. Any faculty available are invited as well. Events have included such perks as catered breakfasts from coffee shops, goodies from smoothie and acai bowl spots and from ice cream shops, a mid-summer Dodgers game, and a summer finale with an In-N-Out truck.
Dornsife School of Letters, Arts and Sciences
Dornsife names a monthly Spot Award to an employee, who receives a certificate, a Visa gift card and an email of congratulations that is copied to their manager and the nominator. In addition, Dornsife awards a few exceptional staff members each year an annual staff award – a formal process that includes a higher monetary prize and lunch with the dean.
Facilities Management Services
FMS recognizes its employees at the annual FMS Recognition Day lunch during Commencement, taking a break from the effort putting in for graduation setup. FMS gives employee awards and a manager award.
Human Resources Division
The HR Division celebrates employees with quarterly lunch events in honor of employee birthdays, employee anniversaries, and holidays (with a costume contest at Halloween). At the last holiday luncheon, the division announces and celebrates the highlights and accomplishments from the year.
Keck Medicine of USC
Keck Medicine recognizes an Employee of the Year and Employees of the Month.
In addition, Keck Medicine gives recognition specifically to nurses. These programs include the DAISY Awards, Nursing Week awards and Choi Awards for Patient Experience – see the 2018 Choi Award winners.
Office of Revenue Cycle Management, USC Care Medical Group Inc.
One individual group at Alhambra has their own special way of boosting moral. The group passes around a stuffed pickle, Señor Pepino, to teammates recognized for their hard work and team values. That team member gets to take Señor Pepino on an adventure!
Price School of Public Policy
Price holds an annual barbecue luncheon in May to award outstanding faculty and staff. Winners receive a $1000 gift. Employees achieving service milestones are recognized at the event as well.
Provost Shared Services
Provost Shared Services names a “Star Player” every month. The winner receives a certificate and Amazon gift card – and gets to hold the Hall of Fame football for that month. See all winners on the Provost Share Services site.
School of Cinematic Arts
Annually after the new fiscal year, employees enjoy a barbecue lunch – during which they receive free movie tickets and get to go home early after the picnic. At Commencement, the school gives out a Staff Recognition Award. The winner receives a trophy with their name on it.
Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work
Each year, Social Work names a Wendy Smith Humanitarian Award and an Outstanding Achievement Award. Throughout the year, the school engages staff with wellness initiatives available to them during working hours, inviting guest experts to provide tips and tools to use on the job. Staff also enjoy an annual “thank you” breakfast during spring break, and receive from the dean’s office a gift card for the holidays.
Viterbi School of Engineering
Each spring, the dean hosts the Faculty and Staff Appreciation Luncheon. Along with sharing the school’s and employees’ exceptional accomplishments and upcoming opportunities, select faculty and staff receive awards.
